Woz on Creativity: Work Alone

"Most inventors and engineers I’ve met are like me — they’re shy and they live in their heads. They’re almost like artists. In fact, the very best of them are artists. And artists work best alone — best outside of corporate environments, best where they can control an invention’s design without a lot of other people designing it for marketing or some other committee. I don’t believe anything really revolutionary has ever been invented by committee… I’m going to give you some advice that might be hard to take. That advice is: Work alone… Not on a committee. Not on a team.”

Groupthink doesn't change the world. A simple idea, brilliantly executed, does. That idea starts with one person, and a great team can give it lift.

This brainpickings.org piece is a good read on this concept.

Tony Fadell's Newest Invention Is The iPod Of Thermostats

You have to think, What are people going to do with the device 99% of the time? Make sure every detail supports that main interaction," Fadell explains. "The iPod is about scrolling through long lists with one hand, and a thermostat is about dialing the temperature up or down.

Great piece on a great product's design and marketing.

Did Facebook just school the Internet?

Facebook pulled an Apple. Apple releases something, and everyone in their space rushes to do the same thing. But they never realize that it’s a losing position. They’re skating to where the puck has been. Apple skates to where the puck is going to be. Facebook is skating to where the puck is going to be.

MG Siegler's assessment on Techcrunch of the new Facebook is pretty bold, but makes a lot of sense. And the Apple analogy is apt. If only we all knew where the puck was going to be next.

Why we care about Steve Jobs so much.

Steve Jobs is a personification ... of Apple products. Ultimately, that’s why we’re seeing the reaction we’re seeing to his resignation.

And it’s an even stronger bond because it goes both ways. Jobs has poured all of his heart and soul into Apple and these products — each and every one of them.

I truly believe that passion, while unseen, also translates. It’s like when you meet a good kid and you just know that he has good parents. We appreciate Jobs because he has been such a good parent of these products.

He’s a good father in the same way that Walt Disney and Jim Henson were good fathers. Both of those men instilled passion and emotion in people through their products as well.

The best piece I read about Steve Jobs' resignation is the one I quoted above by MG Siegler on Techcrunch. He does a great job writing about the emotion and less about the business, which is exactly why Jobs has had such a strong impact on our lives.

'Diversity' at Apple Inc.

Appledudes

I love the discussion about "diversity" at Apple now that Tim Cook, an unconfirmed gay, white male, is the new chief executive. So I went over to the Apple Web site and took a screen grab of their top leadership to get an idea of what "diversity" looked like.

About Dan McDonough, Jr.

Dan used to be chief executive of elauwit. Now he's just another dude. Check him out on twitter at www.twitter.com/danmcdonough or on linkedin at www.linkedin.com/in/danmcdonoughjr.
